India permits exports of 3.5 lakh tonnes of broken rice to Gambia and Senegal

The Indian government has allowed the export of 3.5 lakh tonnes of broken rice to Gambia and Senegal, previously banned since September 8, 2022, on special considerations.

India has allowed the export of 3.5 lakh tonnes of broken rice to Gambia and Senegal, which were banned since September 8, 2022.

The Ministry of Commerce has permitted the export of 1 lakh tonnes of broken rice to Gambia and 2.5 lakh tonnes to Senegal.

Additionally, the Ministry has allowed shipments of 9,990 tonnes of broken rice to Djibouti and Ethiopia. The decision was made on special considerations following a request from the Ministry of External Affairs.

The External Affairs Ministry would have considered various reasons before approaching the Commerce Ministry.

However, some traders have criticized the move, questioning why the Centre permitted shipments to these countries when it is not allowed to other destinations.

The Centre banned exports of broken rice and imposed 20 percent duty on white and brown rice shipments after the kharif paddy production was affected by the deficient monsoon in key rice-growing regions in the eastern parts.
