Under the patronage of H.E. Eng. Saeed bin Hamoud Al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, SOHAR Port and Freezone commemorated its 20th anniversary, highlighting its significant contributions to Oman’s economic landscape.
The event brought together key government officials and industry partners to celebrate the port’s legacy and pivotal role in global trade.
Since its establishment, SOHAR has attracted an impressive USD 29 billion in investments, showcasing its status as a premier destination for international trade.
In the first half of 2024, the port secured USD 3.4 billion in new investments, reflecting its ongoing appeal and growth potential.
The recent SOHAR Freezone Phase 2 expansion adds 345 hectares of leasable land, addressing the increasing demand for industrial and commercial space.
Eng. Abdullah bin Khalfan Al Jabri, Chairman of the Board of SOHAR Port and Freezone, remarked:
“Our performance underscores our commitment to operational excellence and our crucial role as a logistics hub. We ensure the steady supply of essential goods bolsters local industries and contributes to the national economy.”
CEO Emile Hoogsteden emphasized the port’s transformation into a commerce catalyst:
“We have created an integrated business ecosystem that supports local development and enhances our global competitiveness.”
Key partnerships have propelled SOHAR’s success, particularly with the Port of Rotterdam, solidifying its reputation as a world-class facility.
The upcoming polysilicon factory, developed in collaboration with United Solar Polysilicon, exemplifies SOHAR’s commitment to becoming an industrial and manufacturing hub for green products.
With its contributions amounting to over 2.1% of Oman’s GDP and nearly 36,000 jobs generated, SOHAR’s impact on the local economy is substantial.
The port also champions sustainability through initiatives like the Marsa LNG project, a USD 1.6 billion venture to create a solar-powered LNG bunkering hub, aligned with Oman’s Vision 2040.
SOHAR is dedicated to workforce development and launched the ‘Maseer’ program, which provides students with hands-on training.
Over 400 students participated this year, equipping them with essential skills for the digital economy.
SOHAR Port and Freezone is poised to continue its growth by investing in state-of-the-art infrastructure and sustainability initiatives.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary honors past achievements and sets a clear vision for a prosperous future in alignment with national priorities.
