Cochin International Airport (CIAL) has made a significant stride in pet transport services by introducing a pet export service.
This development dramatically relieves pet owners relocating abroad who cannot imagine leaving their furry friends behind.
On Thursday morning, Lhasa Apso puppy Luka became the first pet to embark on a journey from Kochi to Dubai via Doha.
Luka’s proud owners, Rajesh Susheelan and Kavitha Rajesh, originally from Attingal, Thiruvananthapuram, are thrilled with this new service.
Rajesh, who manages a business in Dubai, can now have his beloved pet by his side.
New Facilities at Cochin International Airport
To support this groundbreaking service, CIAL has established a series of new facilities:
Facility | Description |
---|---|
24-Hour Air-Conditioned Pet Station | Ensures pets are comfortable at all times. |
Special Cargo Section | Dedicated area for handling pet cargo. |
Veterinary Doctor on Call | Available for any medical needs of the pets. |
Customs Clearance Centre | Streamlines the process for pets traveling abroad. |
Facilitation Centre | Assists individuals accompanying pets for export. |
These facilities are designed to provide a seamless experience for both pets and their owners.
Enhanced Pet Export Service
Previously, CIAL was authorized only for pets’ domestic departure and arrival.
However, with the new clearance, pets can now be transported as cargo in specially prepared cages to various international destinations.
Efforts are also underway to obtain permission to import pet animals directly from abroad.
A unique ‘Animal Quarantine’ center is being established to facilitate this.
Comprehensive Import and Export Services
In addition to the pet export service, CIAL has been permitted to export and import fruits and plants.
A ‘Plant Quarantine’ center is operational near the cargo section to manage this process.
To avail of these services, cargo handling agencies or airlines must be contacted.
Statement from S Suhas, Managing Director of CIAL
S Suhas, the Managing Director of CIAL, emphasized the airport’s commitment to offering top-notch facilities.
“We aim to equip Cochin Airport with facilities that are on par with India’s leading airports. As part of this effort, all passenger touchpoints have been automated, and various value-added facilities have been established. The implementation of the animal import facility is underway, and sophisticated security systems like full-body scanners will be introduced soon,” he said.
Furthermore, CIAL now has authorization from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to import drugs and cosmetics, enabling stockists to import and store these items in bulk quantities.
This marks a significant change from previous limitations, where only limited quantities could be imported through special permissions.
